Sanjiva: The Realm of Revival Sanjiv is considered a lower realm within Kama Land. It is believed to be a place where beings experience constant revival and regeneration. Despite the destructive nature of this realm, the beings born there continue to live through the fiery earth. Sanjiv is associated with individuals who engage in harmful actions such as acts of violence, cruelty, and exploitation. Kala sutra: The Realm of Time Kala sutra is a realm where beings are trapped in a continuous cycle of spinning and restlessness. It is said that individuals who have committed heinous acts against their loved ones, virtuous beings, and monks and nuns are born in this realm. Kala sutra represents the consequences of harming and betraying others. The Realm of Crushing Sadghat is characterized by dense earth where beings are crushed by rolling rocks, symbolizing the sufferings caused by their past actions. This realm is inhabited by those who have engaged in the torture and killing of animals, reflecting the consequences of cruelty and violence. Raurava: The Realm of Screaming In Raurava, beings are enveloped in an evil smoke that penetrates their bodies, causing constant pain and suffering. The cries of animals being burnt alive resound throughout this realm, representing the anguish and torment inflicted upon others. Raurava serves as a manifestation of the consequences of inflicting pain and torment. Maharaurava: The Realm of Great Rage Maharaurava is characterized by intense heat, loud noises of animals engulfed in fire, and rivers of blood flowing from the bodies of wicked beings. Those who have committed acts of betrayal, theft, and destruction are born in this realm. Maharaurava signifies the repercussions of harmful actions driven by anger and greed. Tapana: The Realm of Heat Tapana is a realm where animals burned by Yamapalu, the king of the dead, are subjected to intense heat. Individuals who have set fire to others’ homes or deliberately caused harm to animals are born in this realm. Tapana represents the consequences of destructive and harmful behavior. Pratapana: The Realm of Intense Heat Pratapana, also known as Great Heat, shares similarities with Tapana. Animals attached to the burning earth are engulfed in flames, enduring excruciating pain. Those who have committed sins believing that there are no consequences after death are born in this realm. Pratapana symbolizes the consequences of ignorance and denial. Avichi: The Realm of Great Profanity Avichi is a realm characterized by walls of fire that stretch endlessly. Flames rise from the ground to the roof, engulfing animals and causing immense suffering. There is no distinction between the flames and the creatures in Avichi. This realm is inhabited by individuals who have committed severe offenses such as killing, stealing, and betrayal. 02 Form Land Rupa Land, also known as the Form Realm, transcends the realm of desires. It is a realm where beings experience refined states of existence, free from sensual cravings. Within Rupa Land, beings have subtle forms and dwell in meditative states. Rupa Land consists of sixteen terrains, each representing different levels of meditative attainment. The inhabitants of these realms possess bodies with varying degrees of refinement and dwell in states of deep concentration. The higher realms within Rupa Land are characterized by sublime experiences and blissful states of existence. 03 No Form Land Arup Land, also known as the Formless Realm, represents the highest realm of existence. It transcends physical form and conceptual attributes. Beings in Arup Land do not possess bodies but exist as consciousness or mental states. Arup Land consists of four formless terrains where meditators who have attained advanced stages of meditation reside. These realms are associated with profound states of consciousness, free from material limitations. 02 The Four Hells In addition to the realms of existence, Buddhism acknowledges the existence of four hells where beings endure intense suffering. These hells are categorized as the evil, beast, ghost, and asura hells. Each hell represents different forms of torment and anguish. 03 The Human World The human world is considered a realm of great potential. It is the realm where beings have the opportunity to attain enlightenment and break free from the cycle of rebirth. However, the human world is also characterized by various challenges and sufferings. It is in this realm that individuals can cultivate positive qualities, develop wisdom, and transcend their karmic limitations. 04 The Six Heavens The six heavens represent realms of refined existence, characterized by exquisite beauty, celestial beings, and harmonious surroundings. These heavens are associated with elevated levels of consciousness and offer a respite from the suffering inherent in lower realms. Beings in the heavenly realms enjoy immense pleasure and joy, but their existence is still subject to the cycle of birth and death. 05 The Eleven Lustful Realms The eleven lustful realms are realms of existence where beings experience intense desire and attachment. These realms are populated by various types of celestial beings driven by sensual cravings. Although the inhabitants of these realms enjoy sensual pleasures, their attachment to these pleasures perpetuates their cycle of rebirth and prevents them from attaining ultimate liberation.
